What a refreshing surprise. From the outside The Lion looks like a typical village inn. It may date from the 16th century, but the bedrooms take their design cues from the 21st century. Stylishly simple and finished in muted tones, they have been cleverly remodelled in line with contemporary tastes and expectations. And everything – from the modern Welsh fabrics to the neat, chunky furnishings and attractive bathrooms – blends well into The Lion’s historic fabric. Downstairs, we’re back in traditional territory. The pub, open at weekends, has a cosy atmosphere and there’s also a low-beamed restaurant open all week to residents (advance booking required). Your convivial hosts, Dai Richardson and Rose James, are on hand to chat. Located in a sleepy village yet convenient for much of North Wales, it’s a great place well worth seeking out.
