There’s continuity in places like Llandovery. It’s good to know that travellers to this handsome country and market town can still rely on traditional hospitality – but with a modern twist. The King’s Head certainly has the right pedigree. This 16th-century inn (once home to Wales’s first drovers’ bank) certainly looks the part, with its characterful exterior, cosy bar, exposed stone walls and old timbers. But it also offers all modern comforts and finishing touches, with spacious, airy rooms, attractive bathrooms, Jacuzzis and fluffy towels, together with a warm welcome from your host Michael Vince and his young enthusiastic colleagues. The food is another noteworthy feature, served in an atmospheric setting. The kitchen, just like the inn itself, remains faithful to its roots. Welsh flavours shine through in dishes like Penclawdd cockles (from the Gower Peninsula), Welsh faggots, lamb shank and goat’s cheese, and the hearty ‘Drover’s Pie’. There’s an excellent choice of Welsh cheese in particular, with detailed descriptions of each. It’s an ideal touring centre too, set amongst some of Wales’s wildest, most beautiful countryside and gardens, including the Brecon Beacons National Park, the National Botanic Garden and Aberglasney Gardens.
